The Land Use Leadership Initiative (LULI) is returning to the greater Portland metro area, and applications are open now. In 2012, 1000 Friends of Oregon created LULI to bring Oregonians together to learn how to effectively defend and improve the statewide land use planning system. Each LULI experience is unique and is shaped by the cohort’s interests, backgrounds, and skill sets.
For this cohort, we “reimagine the American dream,” drawing heavy influences from the work of environmental activist, Indigenous rights advocate, and poet John Trudell. We will examine current land use, housing, transportation, and economic development policies, investments, and decisions. We’ll also introduce case studies of new policies and approaches as the cohort reimagines the American dream, together.
LULIs will learn from guest speakers, visit important sites for conservation and development, and learn more about the roles and responsibilities in government, philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, and business.
Apply by December 15, 2024 for priority consideration.
Who should apply?
Oregonians based in the greater Metro area interested in joining a cohort that grapples with how we should manage a growing metropolitan region, homelessness, displacement, and inequity should apply! Please apply if any of these describe you:
- You believe in the value of contributing to the community and to good governance.
- You want to expand your advocacy tools and have a greater impact on land use issues.
- You love Oregon and want to protect our farms and forests, conserve natural areas, and enhance quality of life in urban and rural communities.
- You are committed to collaboration, transparency, and accountability.
- You are an advocate for anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and environmental justice.
LULI will bring together a cohort of dynamic, problem-solving Oregonians to learn about a variety of policy options and take action to help improve the region.
LULI is about much more than land use. It brings together community leaders with a wide range of perspectives to work together for the outcomes our communities need. Together we’re building diverse, grassroots capacity to engage on land use debates and issues. We hope that you’ll apply to join us!
