The state Wildfire Programs Advisory Council (WPAC) recently published its 4th annual report to the legislature and Governor, Advancing Fire Protection In Oregon.
The WPAC was established by the legislature in 2021 when it passed SB 762, creating Oregon's first comprehensive wildfire mitigation, preparation, and resilience program. This program is designed to help Oregonians live safely with wildfire, by directing and integrating the work of eleven state agencies. It includes guidance, investments, and direction on defensible space, landscape treatment, community risk reduction, home hardening, smoke mitigation, utility shut-off plans, staffing and equipment enhancements, using the Oregon Conservation Corps, and more.
The WPAC members are appointed jointly by the Speaker of the Oregon House and President of the Oregon Senate. 1000 Friends Associate Director Mary Kyle McCurdy is a member of the WPAC and has served as Vice Chair for the past two years.
