“Any little opening is an invitation for fire.”
—Christina Meyer, fire risk assessor and homeowner
Throughout our Wildfire Wednesday series, we have explored the various actions that individual Oregonians and communities can take to be more wildfire prepared and to reduce the risk of wildfire occurring in their own community. Today we bring you the story of someone who has done just that.
Our team produced this video, featuring Christina Meyer, the first homeowner in Oregon certified by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety for having brought their home up to the "Wildfire Prepared Home” standard and maintained it. This is the industry standard, which insurance companies are increasingly looking to as the best practice for all homeowners in wildfire prone areas.
As you will see in this video, Christina shares several simple, even cost-effective, things we can all do to reduce the risk of losing our homes to wildfire, even if we can’t get all the way to “Wildfire Prepared.” As she emphasizes, “Any little opening is an invitation to fire,” and closing up as many as we can will make a difference in protecting our homes and our communities.
Wildfire Wednesday is a storytelling project that aims to increase wildfire resilience across Oregon.
