Election recap: Housing measures fail but we will continue to partner with community advocates

By Jacky Lee | 1.5-minute read

At 1000 Friends of Oregon, we believe something very simple: Every neighborhood should be attainable for any family, regardless of their income, skin color, or disability status. We believe land use and zoning are critical tools to make this level of housing access possible—and we have consistently advocated for smart growth strategies to improve affordability and reduce segregation.

We also recognize that funding is a critical piece of the puzzle. That’s why we supported the locally-led Astoria Housing Initiative (Measure 4-247) and Hood River Measure 14-85. Both measures sought to add more funding for the housing Oregonians need, in places that make sense for the well-being of our lands and communities.

Astoria: Measure 4-247 (Astoria Housing Initiative)

Unfortunately, the Astoria Housing Initiative did not pass, but we commend the organizers for their hard work and commitment to equitably addressing the housing needs of their community. This was an ambitious and deeply necessary campaign and we are proud to be a part of this story. 1000 Friends will continue to support Astoria residents and others across the state advocating for housing affordability and access.

Hood River: Measure 14-86

While we are disappointed that Hood River voters did not approve Measure 14-85, we continue to be impressed by the City’s ongoing commitment to housing affordability and access. We commend the City for their completion of Mariposa Village, a new affordable housing complex that adds 129 new homes to the community. We will continue to support Hood River in its efforts to ensure local residents and workers are able to afford to live in town.
